Miss Michigan of 1947 admits cashing stolen checks
NEW YORK March 4 UP Brunette Peggy Ellsworth Miss Michigan of 1947 admitted she once cashed stolen government checks to get dope but said she is cured. The 22 year old appeared in a police lineup on a federal charge of possessing and cashing United States treasury checks taken from the mall. Detectives said checks were taken from Detroit mail boxes in 1950 and some passed there that year. Ellsworth said she cashed four or five of the checks totaling 300 or 400 dollars. She said she worked with a boy named Wells a Negro. Now a Broadway nightclub entertainer Ellsworth said she had been twice arrested in Michigan on narcotics charges but never jailed and no longer uses dope. She was poised as detectives questioned her under lights. Her hair was drawn back in a bun. Detectives called her the best-looking woman seen in the lineup in years. She was to be arraigned before a U S commissioner.

Priest and father save man from 47th floor ledge
In Cincinnati a 24 year old man climbed to the 47th floor ledge of Carew Tower at 3:30 AM threatening to jump. A priest Father Paul Huber and the man's father urged him to safety as onlookers watched from rooftops and TV crews broadcast the rescue. The man was taken to a hospital for observation after being pulled back by the priest and his father with assistance from police and life squad members.
