Tornado Toll Rises as Michigan Ohio Storm Ravages Cities

A severe outbreak of tornadoes struck Michigan and Ohio killing 241 people and injuring over 750. Flint endured the worst damage with at least 113 dead as homes were flattened and hospitals overwhelmed. National Guard and state police assisted in rescue while Gov. Williams directed relief efforts.

Dragging Death Shocks Los Angeles Father of Ten

A 52 year old man Antonio Portillo died after being dragged two miles behind a speeding car in East Los Angeles. He and his wife Frances 46 had ten children aged 2 to 28. Investigators say Portillo argued with two men who rammed a car into his friend's vehicle and Portillo was caught by the rear bumper as the car sped off. A witness fired eight shots but Portillo was killed when his body separated from the car.

West Backers Win Italian Senate Races

Rome reports Interior Minister Mario Scelba announced the pro American coalition held a line on the Senate majority as 2000 of 48 743 districts remained to be counted. He cited Christian Democrats ahead of Communists and Socialists but gave no exact totals.

MEW XUKK ubine stock market declined today with several shares dropping sharply. In early trading 410000 shares changed hands as large blocks appeared on the tape. Major losses included Amerada Petroleum down 5.52 to 158, Texas Pacific Land Trust off 2.50 to 119, Illinois Central Railroad down 2.37 to 74, Seaboard Air Line Railroad down 2 to 109, Zenith Radio down 1.25 to 66.75, General Electric off 1.25 to 7, and Chrysler down 1.25 to 71.50.

French Commandos Kill Reds in Indochina Raid

French commando units killed 159 Vietminh guerrillas in a raid 90 miles south of Vinh. Vinh is described as the insurgents' administrative center. The operation also destroyed 60 small boats.

Armistice talks near finish at Panmunjom hut

In Panmunjom, Allied and Communist staff officers completed final details of a Korean armistice. A brief 12 minute plenary session signaled talks narrowing to finish wording and cease-fire line revisions. Another meeting was set for 11 a.m. Wednesday Long Beach time as progress appeared likely within the week.

Long Beach Purse Seiner Lucky Star Sinks Off Mexico

All 11 crew members were rescued after the Lucky Star fouled its propeller on a fishing net and sank off the coast of Mexico while fishing for the South Pacific Canning Co. at Long Beach. The rescued crew were picked up by the West Coast, skippered by Tom Tanishita, and will be taken to La Paz for transport by air.
