Panmunjom AP report says prisoner exchange pact clears last hurdle to armistice while South Korea's Rhee vows to keep fighting. Demonstrations and cabinet pressure push toward defiance as Allied and Communist negotiators may meet Tuesday for full cease fire.
President Eisenhower sent nominations to the Senate naming Laughlin E. Waters of Los Angeles as U S attorney for Southern California and Charles Slusser mayor of Akron as federal administrator candidate. Kathryn Howard of Boston was proposed as deputy administrator of the Federal Civil Defense Administration. Waters is a California legislator and former deputy attorney general. Slusser is a Republican who has led Akron since 1914.
South Korea plans to continue the Korean War despite Eisenhower urging a truce. President Syngman Rhee told an Associated Press photographer the people will ignore any impending armistice. Cabinet and crisis committee meet behind locked doors to reject terms and return to Pusan to seek Assembly guidance. Rhee warned the public as Panmunjom talks move toward a prisoner exchange.
Senator Knowland urged President Syngman Rhee to face reality and accept truce terms in Korea. He warned actions endangering the existing armistice threaten Korea and UN forces, noting Eisenhower backed assurances for Korean freedom and a potential U.S. security pact.

SACRAMENTO AP The Senate judiciary committee killed a gambling abatement bill as the Legislature eyed Wednesday adjournment with most bills awaiting action. The measure by Assemblyman Charles Chapel would allow police to padlock buildings with gambling. Senator Earl Desmond criticized the wording saying it could criminalize private games and other money games now legal in California. The committee also rejected radar speed trap and jail loan fund bills, and a housing and care program bill for seniors backed by Governor Earl Warren.
Secretary of Defense Wilson told the Senate that the Air Force will stay the best in the world and cannot be defunded amid talks of a Korea truce. He warned against demobilization and emphasized we will not accept a second best air force. Gen. Hoyt Vandenberg warned a large cut could leave the service second rate.

Belgrade based Borba admitted in May it was hoaxed by reports of a Yugoslav soldier receiving five million dollars from an American aunt and gifting it to the state. The Sarajevo tale quoted Capt Vaso Antonio as directing diplomats to collect the money for state use. Borba found the windfall story false and said Antonio would face reprimand.
