Tanker Split Between Giants Near Delaware Bay Collision

In Delaware Bay a seagoing tank ship split in two after a collision with another large oil carrier. Eighty-two of eighty-six crewmen aboard were rescued as flames broke out on both ships. One man, Joseph Donnelly of Marcus Hook Pennsylvania, was confirmed dead.

Denver woman frozen seven hours for liver surgery

Mrs. Constance Stark of Denver, 51, underwent a deep freeze anesthesia procedure that doctors said was possibly the longest of its kind and perhaps the first used for non heart surgery. Surgeon Dr. Mordant Peck led a team at Joseph's Hospital during an over six hour operation to remove a liver abscess, with Stark later listed in fair condition after rapid rewarming.

Boat Upsets Guards Save Two Fishermen

Two ten foot fishing boat overturned four hundred yards off Cherry Ave this morning dumping two fishermen into the water. Lifeguards Roger Hooks and John Mann swam out and supported Joe Medice and Jack L Ross until a rescue boat arrived. The men suffered no evident injuries and were towed to the Golden Ave ramp.

Fireworks Blast Kills Two at N Y Factory Site

An explosion leveled the North American Beedies works Co. factory near Schenectady New York killing owner Albert Benjamin about 47 and employee Anthony Sisario about 43. A third worker Vinent Barbuta Jr 18 was hospitalized with second degree burns. Police believe only three were in the plant at the time.

Cypress Man 67 Burned In Apartment Fire

Earl Goodrich, 67, was seriously burned when a gas heater ignited his clothing and started a fire in his rear apartment at 4891 Camp St. He was hospitalized in Orange County with first and second degree burns over half his body as Cypress volunteers battled the blaze.

Plane Crashes in Naples Killing One and Injuring Several

An Italian air force Mustang fighter exploded in the air and crashed into a Naples apartment house killing at least one person and injuring several others. The pilot bailed out and broke a leg on landing after taking off from Naples airport moments earlier.

Britain May Alter Regency Law Over Princess Margaret

London reports rumors the government may change the Regency Act to keep Princess Margaret from being sole regent if Queen Elizabeth II dies young. The Daily Express says the move could shift regency duties from Margaret to the Duke of Edinburgh while Princess Margaret reportedly loves divorced Peter Townsend. Townsend, a former RAF hero, was appointed comptroller of the Queen Mother’s household and was divorced last year.

Bus Overturns Injuring 28 in Oakland Reno Run

An Oakland to Reno Greyhound bus overturned during a rainstorm near State Route 48 and Highway 40, injuring 28 people including the driver Charles South 28 of Oakland. The bus carried about 34 passengers. two ambulances ferried the injured to Kaiser Foundation Hospital where they were treated and released, four remained hospitalized.

Police Officer Recaptures Fleeing Liquor Robbers

An off duty officer stopped a bungled liquor store robbery in Los Angeles after a high speed chase. Two suspects, Joe J. Escalante 33 Pasadena and Robert O. Westley 23 Los Angeles, were booked for attempted armed robbery. The incident began when Nathan Dow 57 owner of Dow Liquor Store was present at 445 W Broadway and fled as items toppled to the floor. Officer Fred Ropers 54 Corona Ave fired shots into the air, halting the car and allowing other officers to assist. The pursuit started near midnight on Broadway and ended at Third St and Chestnut Ave.

William Farnum, famed silent screen star and noted for a legendary on screen fight, died at 76 from cancer and uremia. Florida Youth Mangled by Savage Gator

A teen was mauled by a six foot alligator while alone at an abandoned water hole near Miami. James Stewart, 35, was hospitalized after surgery for gashes to the head, chest, arm, and right foot. Attendant Harold Hale said tooth marks appeared on the head but were not deep. Stewart fought toward shore, the reptile bit his foot, arm, head, and shoulder during the scramble to safety.
