Navy Protecting California's Only Sea Elephant Herd
The Navy guards the sea elephant herd at San Nicolas Island, 75 miles northwest of Long Beach, preserving California's sole colony and nearby abalone beds. Once near extinction with about 50-? fishers, the herd now numbers 135 or more as protection and island restrictions keep civilians out. The site hosts sea lions and rookeries along the beach where animals are wary of humans, unlike the sea elephants which tolerate approaches and were hunted in the past for oil.
