The United States and the United Nations would enter a major war with vastly increased ship tonnage and faster speeds. The nation could mobilize more than 50 million tons of shipping, with 26 million gross tons over 1000 tons and 7.2 million tons in active dry cargo and passenger ships. Reserve fleets on the coasts and drydock capacity in California and the Bay Area would shape recovery and expansion. The UK and other allies could add millions more, creating a large pool for early war needs compared with World War II.
