New Quotas Believed Due text Month
Washington July 17 AP Maj Gen Lewis B Hershey Selective Service director today raised the possibility of another draft call next month He also said stiffer draft regulations may be needed if the world situation worsens In a prepared statement Hershey said I see no reason to believe that there will not be another draft call for delivery of men after the September call is filled And if things continue to grow worse it may be necessary to tighten the law concerning exemptions of veterans and the regulations concerning dependence Selective Service has ordered the drafting of 20000 men for the army by Sept 30 The draft law exempts veterans of 90 days war service or more At present the draft is not being applied to married men or persons with children or others dependent upon them for support The Army has said it has no present plan for another draft call but has emphasized that conditions are subject to quick change From other sources it has been learned that a second call for perhaps 20000 men might come in October Draft boards throughout the country have been ordered to fill their quotas for the first call as tricky as possible and no later on Sept 30 Meanwhile the Army has announced that it has lowered its qualification rules for volunteers A spokesman said the production places volunteers on an equal test footing with draftees for whom the selective act requires a test grade of 70 Volunteers had been required to make its score of 3 The qualifying grades was reduced after its call for 20000 draftees last week
