India completed the transfer of 21 809 anti Red prisoners to U N Command at Panmunjom as North Korean broadcasts called the move destroying the armistice. The final group, a Chinese prisoner, left at 12 55 a m Long Beach time after a mostly smooth operation in rain and mud with many singing and cheering.
In FANMUNJOM AP report, prisoners of war from China and North Korea begin peaceful marches out of compounds in Korea's neutral zone at 52 am as decades of tension fade. The crowd cheers while veterans recall past invasions, and the scene echoes with bugle calls and drums.
Highland Park report says a 25 year old hair stylist in a sports car led police on a high speed chase at 95 mph with six shots fired as three patrol cars pursued. Don Anderson and passenger Marva Higginson fled. Anderson surrendered after the car was struck. Anderson claimed four tickets last year and sought to avoid arrest.
Seismograph notices from Fordham University record two moderate tremors Tuesday night. The first shock struck at 11 24 18 p m and the second at 11 33 37 p m as a distant quake, origin undetermined, noted by Rev Joseph Lynch university seismologist.
In Seattle a 65 year old gambler, Harry Andrew Wagner, killed his 11 year old daughter Virginia Wagner, who suffered spastic paralysis, and then shot himself. Natalie Wagner, the mother, found Virginia on the couch and later learned the couple’s deaths. Coroner Brill ruled murder and death by own action. The couple married August 3 194? in Goodfield Nevada.
Secretary of State Dulles planned to meet Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov in Berlin to discuss a United Nations backed plan for peaceful atomic energy. Dulles had two earlier talks with Soviet Ambassador Zarubin as Washington prepared for broader negotiations. The plan envisions a pool of atomic materials and knowledge under UN auspices with major powers contributing for medicine and power, aiming for an indirect path to a global agreement.
