Eisenhower Seeks 1955 Budget With Big Cuts and Red Ink

President Eisenhower presented a 65.5 billion dollar budget to Congress, calling for a 5.25 billion cut in spending focused on national security. He warned the government would run about 33 billion dollars in deficit next year despite reductions. He proposed tax changes including a 10 percent personal rate cut and corporate tax realignment, while cautioning against further broad cuts.

Voters Show Slow Start In 25 Oct Long Beach Election

Early voting in Long Beach for the special municipal election indicated a light turnout with only about 4 percent of the 149 534 registered voters casting ballots by 11 30 am. At precinct 153 1061 Atlantic Ave only three voters had appeared before 9 30 am. The seven measure ballot is very short, and many voters left booths in under a minute. Officials expect returns to be compiled quickly tonight.

Coast Guard seeks Fat Squaw in Mexican waters after distress call

The 30 foot ketch Fat Squaw carrying owner William Bodenios Jr and his wife Marie plus four others sought medical aid from Mexican waters during the San Diego to Acapulco race. The vessel, out of Los Angeles Harbor, was near Guadalupe Island after two days of radio silence before a doctor was requested.

San Gabriel Duo Jailed in Phony $20 Flood Plot

Police and federal agents say Clarence Forrest and Clifford Vincent plotted to flood Los Angeles with 500000 in counterfeit bills. Forest, a 48 year old printer, was found with 4000 dollars in bogus notes after a traffic stop. Vincent, a 44 year old photoengraver, is jailed on counterfeiting charges. The pair resided at 2406 North San Gabriel Boulevard and a printing shop and equipment were seized.

Kidnaper Robs Cugat and Wife in Hollywood

Hollywood bandleader Xavier Cugat and his wife Abbe Lane told police they were kidnapped and robbed of nearly 20 000 in jewelry and cash by a masked gunman after a performance. They were held briefly, forced to move to a nearby parking area, and later released. Police were summoned from a telephone booth after the incident in Pan Pacific area.

Indio Highway Crash Kills Five and Orphans Baby

A highway crash near Indio claimed five lives and left 4 month old Mary Ellen Baldwin severely injured. The deceased were Norton R. Baldwin and Mildred Baldwin both 32, Norman R. Morrell 14, Alonzo B. Morrell 5 of Abilene Texas, and Clarence W. Stockman 46 of Merced, the second car occupant. The two Baldwin children were from Mildred's previous marriage.

Baby Scalded to Death in Kitchen Sink

Mrs Darlene Stevens 26 left 16 month old Carol Donetta Stevens playing in a deep kitchen sink at 2042 Via Wanda while she checked a noise outside. Returning five minutes later she found the faucet turned on and Carol submerged in boiling water. Carol died at Community Hospital of scald burns and drowning. Deputy Sheriff Paul A Manly noted the mother was given sedatives after the tragedy. Milton W Stevens the father was at work. Firemen could not revive the child.
