Bad checks suspect nabbed in San Pedro case
San Pedro police arrested Alyce Milner 26 at her home on suspicion of passing about 5000 in bad checks across California and Oregon over the past year. Accomplice Thomas Mauling 37 was arrested in Van Nuys as he drove a car tied to the case. Investigators say Milner cashed many checks including six in San Pedro and about 40 in Long Beach, sometimes with Mauling driving her to liquor stores to buy with the flimsy funds. Milner described Mauling as hired to care for his three children and claimed he lied about his wife’s death. The Signal Hill home held pictures and clippings about Spanky McFarland from Our Gang.

Britain A test to be held without U S observers
Washington reports Britain will likely bar foreign observers at its upcoming atomic explosion in Australia. The move mirrors U S precedents after Bikini in 1946. Britain hopes the solo test will strengthen its bargaining for more atomic information from the United States.

Death Penalty Possible for Kluxers Held by FBI
Ten ex Ku Klux Klansmen were seized by FBI agents in North Carolina on kidnapping and flogging charges that could carry the death penalty. The group, including a Fair Bluff constable, faced arraignment with bonds set at 5000 each. Prosecutions hinge on transporting victims across state lines into South Carolina for flogging. The arrests mark a rare federal crackdown on the Klan.

Deadlock in steel wage dispute ends in stalemate
NEW YORK February 16 AP Hearings on the steel wage dispute end with management and labor deadlocked on every issue. A six member Wage Stabilization Board panel hears 14 days of exchanges and warns that union demands could raise prices and inflation, while noting the decision is only a recommendation. The union threatens a 650000 steel worker strike if demands fail, but a decision by the panel is unlikely this week. The panel and WSB will confer in Washington as union president Philip Murray voices the case. White House officials deny a package deal for wage and price increases.
