In Wayne West Virginia on February 16 a 23 year old coal miner's wife, Mrs Paul Napier, performed dental surgery on herself using a sterilized safety razor blade and an old pair of forceps. She had already pulled 13 teeth and planned to extract the remaining 11 as pain lessened.
In Munsan Korea February 16 Associated Press reports the U N command vetoed naming Soviet Russia as a neutral nation to help police the Korean armistice. Poland and Czechoslovakia were accepted as other Red representatives on neutral behind the lines inspection teams. An Allied staff officer said the reason for rejection was obvious though not elaborated. Russians have supplied Korea with fighter planes tanks and other war materiel and had trained the North Korean army prior to the war. The Reds proposed a revised plan for a top level peace inference, omitting non Korean issues but leaving broad wording. The Allies rejected part of the original Red plan which sought sweeping Asian settlements. The Fed proposal said only continued on Page A-3 Col 6.
Fire crews battle a massive gas well blaze at the Lolly Field near Renov o, as renowned specialist Paul Adair arrives from Texas to direct suppression. The well owned by John A. McGuire and partners vents gas high into the air, with Pittsburgh's New York State Natural Gas Corp. estimating a flow near 100,000 cubic feet daily, while earlier figures suggested far less.
Los Angeles police Sgt. Marvin W. Haney aged 31 was shot at the Wilshire Boulevard and Vermont Avenue intersection while pursuing a fleeing youth after a nearby market robbery. Michael Meehan, 19 from Denver, was captured nearby and admitted the shooting.
FBI agents and local officers seized ten former Fair Bluff Klavern members in a wide raid after two white victims, Dorothy Martin and Ben Grainger, were abducted October 6, 1951, into South Carolina and flogged. The group, including a deputy sheriff and a constable, was disbanded last month.

A 87 year old Navy veteran testified as a surprise prosecution witness in a California Communist leaders trial. He described acting as a liaison between the party and the FBI and identified nine defendants as advocates of violent overthrow. He produced a 1945 Communist card and noted education meetings on Lenin and Marx.
Thomas Howard Grantham, 24, of Sunshine Acres, was killed at 10:15 a.m. when a Santa Fe passenger train struck his car on Imperial Highway crossing. The car was demolished and thrown, his body found near the tracks. The engineer said the driver veered toward the train to avoid impact.
In Urich Switzerland on February 16 a series of avalanches in the Alps killed two more people, pushing the total death toll from 13 days of storms in the western Alps higher. Cold weather tempered hopes of a halt as further slides were reported in Stang Thailand? Austria and Yugoslavia.

Allied ships continued a prolonged naval siege of Wonsan, with nine nations delivering massive bombardment since February. The Defense Department announced that Secretary Lovett will fly to Lisbon Portugal to attend the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Council meeting beginning next Wednesday. Paul Suggs 49 a former market owner slashed his wife Helen 43 to death at their Compton home and savagely wounded daughter Pauline 11 before slitting his own throat with the same knife. The girl applied a tourniquet learned in the Girl Scouts and survived. Martha Ann 8 slept through the tragedy as detectives investigated.
Ida B Wise Smith 81 long noted temperance figure died at the Iowa State Mental Health Institute in Clarinda after a five year illness. She led the Women's Christian Temperance Union as national president from 1933 to 1944 and later resigned. Her declared outlook praised God country and children while denouncing liquor and vice.
Hardy lumbermen and equipment cleared a 27 mile snowbound path in Patten Maine as 100 people faced supplies near exhaustion. Nort woods camps fed by bush pilots were reachable, with rescuers delivering aid before evacuations. First evacuees included Lester Ware and Rosetta Ware from the Diamond Match Co camp near Angaprick. The storm, ongoing since Tuesday, created the life threatening conditions.
Washington February 16 AP The Wage Stabilization Board recommended an average 10 percent raise plus 9 cents per hour for about 10 000 Douglas Aircraft Long Beach workers amid a contract dispute with CIO United Workers. It postponed two sticking points retroactivity and union shop for Monday action. The union seeks 10 percent plus 10 cents.
A 14 year old North Long Beach girl was attacked after alighting from a bus near 59th Street and Linden Avenue at 12:30 a.m. She was forced into a car, beaten, and choked before a resident’s porch light stopped the assault. She was treated at Seaside Hospital for contusions. The assailant, in his early 20s, fled. police investigate.
