In WAPLES Italy on August 22 the Greek army began its first field exercises under NATO jurisdiction to test staff and communications as part of Southern European defense. King Paul expected to witness the drills.
San Francisco AP reports a rising encephalitis outbreak spreading through California's central valleys carried by the female mosquito. Since the epidemic began 30 deaths and nearly 500 illnesses have been recorded, with 十二 fatalities in the past week. State doctors warn no human vaccine exists. spraying and barrier spraying are underway to halt spread.
Radio Moscow says crime in New York has reached a dangerous pass and people should not walk the streets alone at night. The broadcast cited rising costs and desperation, noting similar attacks in Jersey City and Baltimore.
Navy chaplain recalls Audrey Totter visiting wounded aboard the Haven in Korea. She spoke with patients including a critically injured boy from Bunker Hill, spending up to 20 minutes with each, offering quiet talks and care as doctors weighed his condition. Totter later asked about his progress before departing.
Maj. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey, Selective Service director, told an American Legion commission in New York that the armed forces would begin drafting fathers next summer. In Dallas on August 22 AP reports quick witted housewives with brooms rushing to control a burst water main that flooded a boulevard. Neighbors swept water from flooded lawns as the utility crew worked to stop the spill and prevent further damage.
Washington Aug 22 AP government officials say John L Lewis has given formal notice that coal industry contracts will expire at the end of September. This sets up the possibility of a nationwide coal strike if no new agreement is reached. The Hartley Act requires 30 days notice before contract expiration. Lewis signed the notice as UMW general counsel Welly Hopkins. The union has been negotiating with Harry Moses of the Bituminous Operators Association and Joseph Moody of the Southern Coal Producers Association since July. Sixty days notice is required before the expiring contracts can end.
Sen. Richard Nixon said he and Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower will support Sen. Joseph McCarthy if renominated without endorsing his views. They will back Republican Senate and House nominees to win Congress, but will not endorse all McCarthyism or candidate methods. They favor a fair, sane program to investigate charges while protecting rights, and removing security threats.
Washington reports price officials see no end to the inflation spiral that has driven the cost of living to all time highs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes the consumer price index at about 190.8 percent of the 1935-39 average, signaling households pay nearly twice as much for essentials as before World War II while monthly inflation shows only slight flattening near mid August. Officials, aligning with Eis Arnold’s forecast, expect the upward trend to continue into the coming months.
Two Long Beach salvage and tug crews battled to save the collision damaged lumber motor ship Coos Bay after a crash with the Swedish freighter Stratus six miles east of Anacapa Island. Coos Bay flooded, power cut, lifeboats deployed as emergency pumps patched the leak. Coos Bay could be beached or towed for in port and shallow water repairs.
Stockholm reports an ex policeman Tore Hedin pursued after nine killings including the arson deaths of his parents and eight others. He allegedly killed his fiance Ulla Oestsborg and the home matron, then set a northern Sweden old folks home ablaze. Police fear he died in a possible self-inflicted crash after fleeing in a stolen car.
In Sao Paulo a second of the Albano quintuplets died at Santa Paula Maternity Hospital. The surviving babies, including a girl named Maria Angela, were born Tuesday night to Mrs Albano, 38. One had died the day before. The condition of the remaining three infants was not disclosed.
United Nations fighter-bombers struck Communist targets across Korea. Sabre jets damaged two Russian-built MiG-15 aircraft while ground forces repelled two light Red assaults. Twelve B 26 bombers attacked Amak on the Haeju Peninsula and Allied planes hit five large warehouses near Wonsan.
A Dallas woman Diana Stephens 14 learned CPR from TV and saved 10 year old Johnny Shuler from drowning in Mrs C B Hasford yard pool. Firemen arrived as the boy began breathing again. Stephens said she had seen it on television a couple of times.
A 40-year-old aircraft mechanic in Van Nuys says he is the true father of Bathiryt Knodel, a 26 year old murdered Redlands girl. He and Knodel's mother Marie Knodel reportedly married in 1934 and divorced in 1938, with Wells claiming no contact since. Police questioned two suspects for five hours as investigators canvassed the neighborhood. An autopsy indicated Knodel had been sexually violated. Further testing and a Palm Springs inquest were planned as detectives pursue the case.
