San Francisco police arrested 22 year old Paul Wheeler for running a ghoulish confidence scam that duped eastern and midwestern families out of hundreds by posing as a corporal delivering letters from dead servicemen. He allegedly obtained over 300 dollars, used casualty lists to contact survivors, and cashed a 75 dollar telegraphic check before his arrest. Wheeler, dishonorably discharged after brief Army service, faced charges of obtaining money by false pretenses and vagrancy.
A tornado struck Sedalia Missouri at the state fairgrounds killing one man and injuring 17 others. The Sedalia Democrat estimates damage up to 5 million dollars as tents and structures were destroyed. Roads flooded up to three feet and midways suffered extensive destruction. One concession owner from Kalamazoo Michigan, Harry Ray Pyle, 25, was killed. His wife and four year old son were injured. Only one animal, a prize bull, died amid the chaos. The storm lasted three to five minutes before rain continued until about 5 a.m.
In Denver on August 21 a voter told Commissioner Edward Keating she moved from Democrat to Republican claiming Democratic rule 20 years ago pushed her to a size 46 dress after previously wearing a size 12. She cited secvinisation as the reason for the party change.
SACRAMENTO Aug 21 State and federal narcotics agents arrest a suspect on marijuana and heroin charges in a crackdown on alien and narcotics smuggling said to be run from Mexico. Antonio Alvarez seized with a three pound brick of marijuana and 18 heroin capsules in a hotel room. Alvarez’s supplier, an illegal Mexican alien, is still at large.
In Seoul on August 21 AP reports a wall of water swept through a river during a training crossing in South Korea. Thirty U S soldiers from the 45th Infantry Division were feared drowned with 12 bodies recovered and 18 still missing as dredges search the river.
The destroyer minesweeper Thompson was struck by Communist shore fire off Sonjin, Korea, killing four crewmen and seriously wounding ten. The ship, hit in the flying bridge, fought back for some time before casualties were transferred to the battleship Towa. Only one Californian, Chief Quartermaster Howard Joseph Connors of La Mesa, was listed among the dead.
Los Angeles narcotics officers ended a six month undercover investigation by arresting Susie Torrones and her niece Magdalena Loya, both held on narcotics charges after $30,000 worth of refined heroin was recovered. Torrones' husband Yucca is serving a term at McNeil Island Federal Penitentiary for a narcotics violation.
Low clouds linger tonight with a morning lull then mostly sunny skies by afternoon. Temperature remains steady with little change, bringing a mild, dry pattern for the period ahead.
President Truman said he knows nothing about any mess in his administration and rejected Stevensons charge. Stevenson urged naming qualified, incorruptible officials to government jobs to address Washington issues. Truman declined comment on Sparkman steel strike remarks and said he would be a target for Eisenhower’s campaign rather than the Democrats. The exchange centered on running on Roosevelt and Truman records.
Riverside authorities pursue a peeping tom theory after a 16 year old high school girl Kathryn Knodel was found slain on a desert road near Palm Springs. Autopsy indicates a sexual motive and possible lure or ambush by a stranger. The case centers on Oild Wood Canyon near Redlands with screams heard about 11 p.m. Tuesday.
Los Angeles August 21 officers issued a bulletin for a flashy convertible with Hawaiian plates used by a knife armed man who kidnapped Pauline F Wilson 30 wife of aircraft parts maker from a store lot and forced her to drive to Malibu where she was assaulted tied gagged and left on a road before a passerby aided her Police report notes husband Rudolph Wilson recently bought the car and the attacker fled in the convertible after the crime.
In four hours over northwest Korea, 38 Okinama based B-29s and fighter bombers attacked Pyongyang and its outskirts, destroying 63 buildings and damaging 29 more. A daylight strike on Osu, 50 miles south, hit a giant cement plant and surrounding facilities.
Three American pilots were rescued after ditching in Communist waters off northwest Korea. Capt Edwin Leonard led a helicopter retrieval, rescuing Lt Norman Schmidt of California and Maj J B Griffin of Florida near U N lines under fire from shore batteries. Lt G L Whisenhunt of Oklahoma was later lifted to safety by pilot Wailer Karutz of Sacramento.
In the English Channel near Goodwin Sands the American Liberty ship Western Farmer split in two after a Norwegian tanker Bjorg Holm rammed it. Eleven thousand seven hundred thirty two-ton Bjorg Holm remained undamaged and stood by as two British lifeboats rescued all 37 crew members, including Captain Gunnar Utvik, amid stormy conditions and fading signals.
About 46,000 people escaped Communist East Germany to West Berlin and West Germany in two months, according to Federal Refugee Minister Hans Lukaschek. The group includes around 1,000 youths seeking to avoid conscription for the fast German army.
In Belmont California on August 21 a man in an ancient car startled two amateur women painters by emerging nude and posing as a model. The artists kept painting and alerted police after he mugged, with the women insisting they would not be disturbed.
Washington August twenty one AP reports the government cost of living index rose to 190.8 percent of the 1935 39 average reflecting July 15 data. Food clothing shelter and other items climbed with road prices driving the gain. The CIO auto workers contract calls for a one cent raise for each 1.14 rise in the index.
Kansas City Kan August 21 General Dwight D Eisenhower said the United States might face serious trouble if it had not reacted to the 1950 Communist attack on South Korea. He told GOP leaders from seven midwestern states that terrible blunders brought on the Korean war but that reacting to Communist aggression was necessary. He aligned with Truman on going into Korea while criticizing those responsible for past blunders. He added no feasible plan to attack China was presented.
