Downey Teenager Murdered After Wedding Shower Knife Fight

Sheriff's homicide detectives report Rudy Escobedo a 17 year old from Downey was killed by a car while fleeing after stabbing two rival youths at a Paramout wedding shower. Two others Johnny Flores and Benny Hernandez 18 were also involved and wounded in the same incident.

Uprising in Argentina sparks church clampdown protest

In Buenos Aires, clashes erupted outside the Metropolitan Cathedral as Catholics leaving mass clashed with an antagonistic group. Police used fire hoses, several arrests reported, and Florida Street suffered flooding. The incident followed tensions between the Catholic Church and Peronist government, with church prelates expelled and Vatican excommunications noted.

L. A. Trains Delayed by Bridge Washout

Trains from the east were from two to 12 hours late today due to a washout of a bridge approach in Arizona. A heavy thunderstorm near Walapi wiped out the approach about 20 miles east of Fongman and also washed out a bridge approach on U S Highway 66 near the Arizona California border.

A U S Army train carried twelve expectant mothers, wives of American personnel, to Italy due to reduced facilities at Salzburg army hospital ahead of troop withdrawals. A hospital car was attached with a delivery room including incubator bassinets and a special diet kitchen.

Nebraska Prison Riot Ends as Use of Guns Ordered

A 12 hour uprising at Nebraska State Penitentiary collapsed when armed troopers and National Guardsmen entered the cell block with orders to shoot to kill if needed. About 225 inmates had set fires and smashed furniture. one inmate Jack Stover was carried out on a stretcher in critical condition after an apparent attack on the warden Bovey. Governor Anderson said a shot heard was the cell doors clanging. no one was hurt despite an accidental discharge later learned. Stover was serving a three year term for grand larceny from Douglas County Omaha.

Grandson of the Gets Fish Lesson in Colorado Rockies

President Eisenhower's 10 year old grandson David enjoyed his first trout fishing lesson at a stocked pond near Fraser Colorado while reporters observed from a distance. He also rode a white horse with evident skill. The president was seen nearby with what looked like a golf club. The group included Aksel Nielsen White House aides and Eisenhower's son Thad's son. A pistol target appeared near the president's cottage as in past visits.

One year-old airman Bobby D Mann stationed at Perrin Air Force Base Sherman Texas was killed Tuesday night when his car lost control and overturned five miles south of here on U S 271 on his way to marry. His fiancee Vanda Barnard 15 of Sherman was uninjured.

Tractor Driver Killed Fighting Bee Swarm

Jesus Munoz a 25 year old tractor operator was killed in a freak bee swarm incident at the Ling Dooley ranch near here. While attempting to fend off bees his tractor crashed into a tree and his throat was pinioned by a limb, apparently causing his death.

Loss Light as Diane Force Hits North Carolina

Hurricane Diane moved into North Carolina eight days after menacing the South Atlantic coast. Winds whipped high tides into Elizabeth City and Washington and other towns, with 60 mile gusts near the Pasquotank River causing water depths in riverfront stores. The Pasquotank is expected to rise to about three feet, and routes to Norfolk remained open while other routes became impassable. Civilian Defense reported the situation critical as National Guard trucks evacuated residents. Diane’s forward path continued toward Raleigh and the Virginia line at about 12 miles per hour.

Russ to Visit Prize Southland Orchards

A Soviet delegation led by Vladimir Matskevich will tour Southern California citrus orchards in Riverside on Friday. The four-man group will attend a three hour session at the University of California citrus experimental station, studying insect and disease control soil nutrition and orchard economics as part of a rapid refresher course in citrus husbandry. The visit follows a 1947 tour of the UC station by a Georgian Soviet group.

Mysterious Pasadena Hole Deepens From Cesspool to 12 Feet

Aircraft worker Ed Krantz and his family watched a gurgling hole in the front lawn widen from 36 inches to 12 feet deep after varying measurements by locals and workers. The water company and County Health Department investigated and ruled it an old cesspool requiring immediate filling.

New England Polio Cases Hit 1,768 This Year

Boston reports 39 new polio cases lifting the city total to 481 as Vermont records its first polio death of the year. New England's total reaches 1,768 with 56 nonofficial deaths for the region. Navy doctor teams will examine the carrier Kula Gulf’s crew after a fireman from Union City New Jersey identified as Joseph D Rachel 22 is among cases.

Burke Installed as Navy Chief in Naval Academy Ceremony

Tragedy Strikes Twice on Grants Hwy 65

In Grants New Mexico during July 1954 heavy rains flooded U S Highway 65. A road block warned motorists at 3 40 a m on July 26. Two car crash injured four New Mexico Highway Department workers. Six months later Gonzales returned to work. Hooded rain again struck the same stretch. Gonzales alone manned the block when a motorist failed to see it and struck, killing him instantly.
