In Stuttgart Germany two C119 Flying Boxcar planes collided after takeoff from Echterdingen on a training mission. Sixty six people died including crews and troops aboard. The crash near the Black Forest marked West Germanys deadliest postwar air disaster.
Adlai E Stevenson indicated at a Chicago news conference that he will announce in November his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination next year. He argued for bold action on education health housing and highways and warned Eisenhower could reverse current policies at any moment. He criticized Republican plans for resource development and urged government for all the people not the few.
Richard Nixon took his family to Disneyland at 10 30 am with Patricia Tricia and Julie joining relatives. Newsreel crews followed as they were welcomed by W Wood Disneyland vice president and general manager and Fess Parker. The party began in Fantasyland with Tricia and Julie riding Dumbo.
The West German Institute for Economic Research reports East Germany’s population fell by more than a million since 1949. The 1949 total was 17,900,000, now about 16,850,000, with women outnumbering men by 2,200,000. Mass western migration drives the decline.

Hurricane Connie battered the Carolina coast with winds near 75 mph and towering waves that damaged fishing piers. The storm’s eye, packing 100 mph winds, moved toward shore near Wilmington as advisories warned of dangerous conditions from Cape Romain to the Virginia Capes. Forecasters said the storm could bring tides 4 to 6 feet above normal, with higher surges inland.
An African soldier aboard a Singapore bound Malaya train opened fire with a machine gun killing six Asians and wounding 12. He killed himself after the attack. Four dead and five of the wounded were Gurkha soldiers from Nepal. The assailant was from North Rhodesia and in Malaya to fight communist guerrillas.
Thirty Bolivians including many tin miners and family members die when an oxbow launch capsizes on an artificial lake behind the Lupi Dam en route to a Catevi religious ceremony. Rescue and search efforts continue as authorities assess the tragedy.
Mrs. E Downs, wife of a Denver osteopath, told police an intruder entered their home and cut one inch from the left sleeve of each of her husband’s 11 coats. The cut cloth was found tucked into a coat pocket.
An 4 A roaring blast tore through Andover Ohio village square injuring at least 18 and killing many. The Gateway Restaurant and a dairy store were destroyed in a two story frame building as fire crews searched in drizzle until 5 a m. Bodies recovered include 17 from rubble and several unidentified. President Eisenhower names Donald A. Quarles top Air Force secretary designate, replacing Harold Talbott. Quarles, 61, formerly assistant secretary of defense for research and development, is a Van Buren Arkansas native and Englewood New Jersey resident, and will face Senate confirmation. Talbott resignations followed Senate probes. Quarles pledges to divest possible securities and to avoid conflicts. Meanwhile a Long Beach AFL Local 507 agent jailed after an assault incident collapsed in custody, with two union officials arrested for the fight at a Santa Fe Avenue job site. one victim treated and released, while others arrived from Long Beach.
Postwar era drives California growth in population and industry. Raymond Barnowsky and fellow veterans migrate west, fueling a boom that expands manufacturing, construction, and employment. Los Angeles and San Francisco areas lead home building as the state nears 15 million residents, with aerospace and other industries booming and forecasts pushing the population past 16 million by decade’s end.
An Air Force T33 jet bound for Chanute Air Force Base exploded in Vigo County Indiana killing two airmen. Witnesses described a midair blast in heavy overcast about 300 feet above ground as the aircraft was destroyed and fell into an open field. The dead were Capt. Lee Jetton from War Buren Arkansas and 1st Lt. Harry S. Hall of Craig Air Force Base Alabama.
