Brown targets Reagan on crime and Nixon pardon

Democratic candidate Edmund G. Brown Jr. told the California Police and Sheriffs group that California remains the No 1 crime state and urged a state master plan for criminal justice. He suggested summonses for many misdemeanors to save officer time and bolster public safety while criticizing Nixon’s Vietnam policy and his pardon. Brown also pressed for more student aid amid rising costs.

Simon calls unity to beat inflation and costs

Treasury Secretary William Simon urged Americans to unite to fight inflation at an award ceremony in Las Vegas. He called it a team effort and said Congress must act, noting the drop in prime rate should help housing and that the economy was over the hump though not yet bright.

Five Die in Election Violence at Tochimilco Atlexco

Five people were killed and 10 wounded as gunfire erupted in Tochimilco Atlexco during an election near Puebla. Police reported the incident occurred as voting began for a major Tuesday, with a truck believed to have carried out the attack fleeing the scene.

Underground nuclear test Stanyon at Nevada Test Site

A weapons related underground device named Stanyon was exploded at 8 a.m. PDT at the Nevada Test Site 85 to 95 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The yield was 20 to 200 kilotons. No radiation released. observers reported ground motion felt in Las Vegas.

Unseasonably cool wet weather persists Dixie wide

United Press International reports scattered showers and thunderstorms from the West to the East Coast with cooler, wet conditions in the South. Forecasters expect a weekend flip with warm northern Plains and cooler South goods, as central Canada air mass moves into the Rockies and upper Midwest. Temperatures vary from 83 in Yuma and Key West to 32 in Bradford.

Two stand trial for murders in Tucson

Willis Steelman and Douglas Gretzler, previously convicted of nine California slayings, are to stand trial in Tucson on November 7 for three more murders. The Sandbergs were found shot in their apartment with hands tied. Sierra’s body was found in a desert area west of Tucson. The judge ordered handcuffs for both defendants and issued a media protection order.

Eye cancer treatment using radioactive seeds reported

A team from Ohio State University reported successful eye cancer treatment with a polyetherene ring carrying radon filled seeds implanted around the tumor. Led by Dr. Gunther Ehlers, the approach was used on 18 patients with tumor flattening and partial disappearance observed six to eight months after irradiation.

Nixon given permission to abandon California law practice

The California Supreme Court granted former President Richard Nixon permission to relinquish his right to practice law in the state after the State Bar approved the petition. The bar had initially opposed the resignation, citing an ongoing inquiry into possible disbarment related to Watergate, but reversed stance once Nixon acknowledged the inquiry.
