Lighter Side of Flying Demands Honest Pilot Chatter
In a humorous column, Dick West argues travelers may favor a nervous captain over a boastful one. He recalls Captain Abrams who warned of a thunderhead and stayed groundward, asserting passengers prefer pilots who show fear rather than false outer calm. Warning on county oil office funds prompts supervisor alert
County Petroleum Engineer David K. Bickmore’s Santa Maria office collects oil inspection fees under $1,000 a month to offset a 47 287 dollar budget for the year. County Auditor A T Eaves Jr warned the Board of Supervisors as they approved an extra 4 000 for Bickmore to pursue an oil investigation in the Santa Barbara Channel. The funds will come from a 4 475 dollar contingency to hire help and equipment to assess the Union Oil Co leak and natural seep emissions off Coal Oil Point Goleta Valley. Bickmore plans to rent an aircraft and boat for 2 060 labor costs of 912 and drivers 1 080. A mid November report is expected. General Research Corp of Goleta Valley assists. Supervisor Grant called the report highly useful. The board had previously approved doubling inspection fees.
