Federal medical school proposal near reality

Rep. F. Edward Hebert pushes a uniformed services university of health sciences near Washington with hearings starting Tuesday. Sharks harass British rowers 600 miles south of Hawaii

John Fairfax and Sylvia Cook, en route from San Francisco to Sydney aboard the Britannia II, report slow progress and persistent sharks trailing their 35-foot boat. Fairfax recalls a large shark ramming the hull and swam under the vessel, then shows teeth marks and scratches. He says he would shoot a cheeky shark with a spear if needed.

Firefighter killed in California brush fire fights five blazes

UPI reports Robert Miller a 21 year old U S Forest Service foreman died from third degree burns after being trapped by flames in a 600 acre Riverside County fire two miles south of Banning California. Gusty Santa Ana winds fanned five fires as crews battled in Angeles National Forest Ventura County and near San Bernardino with hundreds of firefighters and two water bombing helicopters involved. Traffic was disrupted on Highway 101 and residents evacuated with threat to an orphanage near Mendenhall Peak reduced.

Woman wins unladylike title at Oregon watermelon seed spitting

Mrs. Jenelle Lea of Portland won the first Oregon Watermelon Seed-spitting contest in Newport after a 27 ft 2 in spit. Mayors from Waldport Newport and Toledo competed in a three-spitoff, with winds and seed pickup causing some disqualifications at the Newport Airport lot.
