Grand Prix Moto-Cross Opens Santa Maria Speedway

Santa Maria hosts the AMA sanctioned Grand Prix Moto-Cross with action starting 10 a.m. Sunday and races at noon on the Santa Maria course. Lompoc Slo-Pokes Motorcycle Club runs the event with 200 riders expected and a $1.50 entry for riders and spectators. NASCAR stockers prepare for 150 lap Si Speedway feature

A 22 car field will open the Santa Maria track tonight for a 150 lap feature race with a $4 200 purse the largest on the central coast. Don Simkins and Frank James debut in late model stock cars while Ray Elder leads the points and Jack McCoy seeks a NASCAR mark.

Jaycees shut out Calvary in heavy sluggers display

Jaycees defeated Calvary Baptist 10-0 in an Organizational League slo-pitch game at Thompson Park. Dick Madison hit a homer while Bill Keefe Gil Valenza and Al Walker each had triples and two hits. Bill Degenhart earned the win on five hits. Earlier LDS beat Four Square 8-1 and City Employer blanked Calvary Baptist 8-0.

Barry to miss Warrior opener amid contract dispute

Barry will miss the San Francisco Warriors opening practice at San Jose City College as he and his attorneys head to court Tuesday to fight an injunction from the Washington Capitols claiming Barry remains under contract. The Capitols allege Barry is bound to Oaks ownership, while Barry argues the Oaks contract only stands if the ABA team stayed in the Bay Area. Coach George Lee plans a full, healthy camp with Thurmond, King and Mullins despite last season injuries.
