County surplus auctions exceed annual goal in Goleta sale

The County Purchasing Department reports $84,142 raised from three surplus equipment auctions since last November. Auction on Sept 13 at the County Road Yard sold 52 vehicles including police cars and transport trucks, greatly improving revenue from prior years.

County group reactivated under Stickney as association plans growth

William H Stickney, newly elected president and county purchasing agent, announces the County Department Heads Association has been reactivated and rejuvenated. Rita Van Buskirk was elected secretary and Norman W Caldwell named vice president. Meetings will be held regularly to serve as a sounding board for new concepts and informative sessions on departmental activities.

Goleta area eyed for 100 foot lighthouse tourist complex

Macco Corp seeks a conditional use permit for a 100 foot ornate lighthouse on a hill behind Goleta Valley to serve as a tourist complex with a restaurant gift shop and service station. The plan includes a sea coast village beneath the hill near U S Highway 101 and Gaviota Village rezoning was approved in April.

Look loses round in libel battle with SF mayor

Look magazine failed to halt depositions in its libel suit against Mayor Joseph Alioto. The U.S. Court of Appeals refused to intervene, allowing author depositions to proceed in the mayor's office. The panel kept the lower court orders intact while an appeal proceeds.

Minuteman I launch reported from Western Test Range

Daily records notes an apparent successful Minuteman I intercontinental ballistic missile launch by the Strategic Air Command crews of the 394th Strategic Missile Squadron on the Western Test Range. Planes collide near Da Nang kill 64 in Vietnam

A U S Air Force F4 Phantom and an Air Vietnam DC4 collided near Da Nang air base. The DC4 and 62 aboard were destroyed, with two villagers dead and two injured. One Phantom crewman parachuted to safety and the pilot landed. The airliner victims were South Vietnamese civilians.
