Nixon Offers 5.5 Billion Push to Restore Housing Credit

President Nixon outlined a near term 5.5 billion housing boost including 2.5 billion in new loan commitments from thrift institutions and a 3 billion private funds pull through a tandem plan. He described forward commitments by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board to shield savers and urged Congress to act on long range housing reforms. The plan also envisions replacing subsidies with cash payments for the poor to expand choice and reduce federal housing involvement.

U.N admits East and West Germany and Bahamas

The General Assembly admitted East and West Germany and the Bahamas at the opening of its 28th session raising membership to 135. Ambassador Joseph Tekoah supported the resolution after recalling Nazi era memories, while West German Foreign Minister Walter Scheel attended. The Senate neared agreement on a pension reform bill boosting worker protections but split over a provision seen as a tax loophole for the wealthy for high income doctors and lawyers.

Stubblebine to discuss mental health plan with Santa Barbara council

Dr. J. M. Stubblebine will discuss the Five-Year Mental Health Plan and health department reorganization with the Citizens Advisory Council at the El Patio Motor Hotel in Santa Barbara. The 15 member council meets quarterly to review services and advise the Health Director on rules, with sessions open to the public at 8:30 a.m. The Thursday program features Eugene Bardach on residential care in community facilities, while Friday covers pilot evaluation results from five counties.
