Cannon recovered from ship sank off Pt Arguello in 1854

A part time adventurer joined two Santa Maria men to raise a 700 pound brass cannon from the Yankee Blade which sank off Pt Arguello in 1854. The trio found the sunken site in November 1966 and have recovered artifacts including port holes and a passenger soap dish.

Parker wins rezoning for Goleta slough development project

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors approved Fess Parker’s rezoning request to permit a multi use complex near the Goleta Slough including a mobile home park, motel, riverboat restaurant, coffee shop and service station. UC Santa Barbara involvement was discussed but no objections were raised.

Californians seek major federal tax and policy overhauls

In a district survey led by Rep. Charles M. Teague 13th district constituents back ending several tax exemptions for the wealthy and press for broad changes to U S foreign policy. They favor cooperation with the Soviet Union, support large scale private aid to undeveloped countries, and urge stronger NATO while opposing China’s UN entry. Opinions vary on Vietnam, ABM, oil rights in the Santa Barbara Channel, and two years of mandatory service.

City Beautification Committee to discuss trees and awards

County supervisors shuffle planning leaders and library funds

The board named Herbert H. Diverbiss and Richard S. Whitehead to the La Purisima County Advisory Committee and moved to exempt assistant department heads from merit system rules. It approved a county library system operation for 1969 70 and allocated 294 dollars for a Santa Maria Times ad promoting a forthcoming North County color brochure. Also tabled highway studies for a State Highway 154 freeway area and agreed to reconsider a prior budget denial for Work Inc with a hearing set for next Monday.
