Quiet at Camp Pendleton Brig After Disturbances

At Camp Pendleton the brig was reported incredibly quiet Monday night after three disturbances the previous evening were quelled by tear gas. A base spokesman said no violent incidents occurred Monday amid a Marine Corps investigation and a congressional probe into allegations of prisoner mistreatment.

James Brown testifies in Sacramento paternity suit

Cairo mayor and police chief resign amid violence fears

In Cairo Illinois Police Chief William H Petersen and Mayor Lee P Stenzel resign citing ongoing violence and threats of bloodshed. Petersen’s appointment in June followed outbreaks of sniping and arson amid community tensions with black leadership alleging biased hiring. Beverly Hills Kidnap Suspect Pleads Innocent

A merchant seaman charged with kidnapping Alan Ramo son of TRW vice chairman Dr. Simon Ramo pleaded innocent. Bail set at 25000. Police captured him in the Santa Monica Mountains near the Ramo residence after the ransom note and a late night abduction. The suspect reportedly told detectives he intended to kidnap the mother first but changed plans.

San Francisco State College Loses Accreditation

SF State drops to two year accreditation after five months of student unrest. President S I Hayakawa says masters in social welfare not endorsed and 60 to 70 graduates face devalued degrees. Los Angeles Teachers Authorize Strike But Schedule Downgraded

In Los Angeles the Association of Classroom Teachers with 80 percent counted voted 10 716 yes and 3 075 no to authorize a strike. They may strike during the school year but not before spring and a boycott begins Thursday as pay demands rise from 5 percent to as high as 23 percent negotiations.

Chicago Brothers Face Murder Trial For Ramon Novarro Slaying

Jury deliberations began in Los Angeles in the murder trial of brothers Paul Ferguson 23 and Thomas Ferguson 18 charged with the bludgeon slaying of silent screen star Ramon Novarro 69. They testified they framed each other and claim innocence. The judge read 78 pages of instructions as the panel, seven men and five women, was sequestered for the night. Possible verdicts include first or second degree murder voluntary or involuntary manslaughter or innocence. Thomas was 17 at the time, risking life imprisonment. Paul faces possible death.

Alaska to reap all from big oil sale

Alaska will receive the entire $900 million from a recent oil sale, with California not receiving any share despite years of receiving state oil revenues. The Santa Barbara channel sale money previously went to the federal government after a 1968 Supreme Court decision. Alaska plans to invest the windfall to boost fishing lumber tourism and infrastructure and consider tax reforms, including ending the state income tax.
