Lompoc Soldier Killed in Vietnam
Lompoc High School graduate First Lieutenant Nicholas Christopher Petanovich, 22, son of Mr and Mrs Andrew Petanovich of 213 North X Street, died September 9 from wounds received on September 8 while serving with the 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized). Born in Sheboygan Wisconsin, he graduated from Lompoc High in 1966 and was commissioned at Fort Benning May 1969. He had earned the Bronze Star and had served with the 1st Division prior to his current unit.

Passenger shoots hijacker on TWA jet in San Francisco
A passenger on Trans World Airlines Flight 15 from New York shot the hijacker armed with a blank-cap pistol as he tried to force the aircraft to North Korea. The wounded man, Don Irwin of Reseda, California, was hospitalized. no other injuries were reported among 63 aboard.
