A Gunnison High School junior varsity bus transporting players to a football game crashed on Monarch Pass. Eight players and a coach died. 39 injured with 19 hospitalized, three in critical condition. Driver Royce Mustain survives. Investigators probe braking failure and causes.

Over the weekend three people died in county traffic crashes and two Lompoc residents were injured. Victims: Jill Perphida Meyer 19 Nipomo Harold D Jolliffe 23 Santa Barbara and Robert Navarro Gongora 29 Genoa Ohio. A fourth person Larry Robert Wyatt 23 Lompoc suffered minor injuries in a single vehicle crash on Gibralter Road Santa Barbara. Bryan Berntsen 9 of Lompoc County Country Club area was treated and released after bicycle collision with a car.

Soviet task force sighted near Hawaii cruising toward Oahu
A Soviet naval task force of 10 ships was reported 200 miles northeast of Honolulu. The group, including a light cruiser, destroyers, and at least one nuclear submarine, moved south from Alaskan waters where they had operated since mid August. The Navy called it the largest Soviet entry into Hawaiian waters in years and noted no official visit request.
