Lompoc City Council backs correctional feasibility study

The Lompoc City Council agreed to participate in a feasibility study of a northern Santa Barbara County correctional system while disputing parts of a preliminary report. Police Chief James Smith outlined city advantages and disadvantages, including moving jail operations to Santa Maria and adding a juvenile facility. The council also sought $54,850 in federal Public Employment Program funds and reached a compromise with Valley Medical Group on a $100,000 clinic project.

Sheriff Reimbursed for Training Costs Surpass Earlier Projections

Santa Barbara County's General Fund gains 41,753.22 from the Sheriff's Department partial reimbursements for salaries of 53 personnel trained in basic and advanced state courses. Officials expect these funds to double next year under the Peace Officer Training Fund. Sheriff John W. Carpenter plans to ask the Board of Supervisors to create a self-sustaining training fund to continue state reimbursed education and reduce operating costs.

City to participate in employment act program in county

The City of Lompoc will join the federal Emergency Employment Act of 1971 with a one year program. Initial hires include two custodians and staff in a electric estimator, junior accountant, police officer and services clerk roles. Total county funding amounts to 811 600 with distributions to state county and five cities including Lompoc Santa Maria Santa Barbara Carpinteria Guadalupe and others.

SAT tests set for Oct. 9 in California only

A special three hour SAT administration will be held in California on Saturday morning October 9 1971. Students planning to take the October SAT must follow special instructions as completion is required for some state funded scholarships. Miss Meg Urbach Allan Hancock College counselor urges freshmen and sophomores to contact WA 27711 Ext. 281 for guidance on test procedures and state aid options.

Three Lompoc residents on probation for narcotics

Pamela Jean Roberts Clara Ann Flores and Michael William Wright all of 512 B NT St were placed on three years probation in Lompoc Justice Court after being found in a place where narcotics were used and possessing narcotics paraphernalia Police arrested them on July 31 at the North T Street apartment.

Alaska jet crash toll tops 111 in single disaster

Recovery teams say they have found the bodies of all 111 victims of the Alaska Airlines jetliner crash on a remote mountainside near Juneau. The wreckage destroyed the plane, stalling recovery work amid fog as bodies are moved to a temporary morgue at the National Guard Armory.
