Two take Dirksen's GOP duties in Senate

Eastern liberal Gordon Allott of Colorado and Rocky Mountain conservative Hugh Scott of Pennsylvania move into leadership roles as Senate Republicans navigate Dirksen's absence after lung cancer surgery. Scott remains Dirksen's deputy while Allott chairs the Policy Committee. both lack Dirksen's clout but may shoulder duties along with Senators Smith and Young who could take on leadership tasks. Dirksen's tumor was cancerous. doctors report no spread and no further treatment needed.

Andersons Restaurant plans motel complex rezoning approved

Buellton planners back a 1.3 acre site north of Highway 246 for a motel and tourist ventures with an investor group from Solvang Buellton. The County Planning Commission voted 5-3 to recommend changing the property from 8-R-2 to C-2 over staff preference, forwarding to the Supervisors for confirmation.

Reagan signs bills to curb vice and welfare costs

Gov. Ronald Reagan returned from a three week vacation to Sacramento and signed measures targeting organized and freelance vice, enacting automatic jail terms for convicted prostitutes and protecting confidential informants in vice cases. He also approved five spending controls in welfare and medical programs and a bill allowing parental removal of children from sex education and religious instruction.

Nixon seeks to trim middle class tax cuts and cut corporate rates

Treasury Secretary Kennedy and assistant Cohen urged the Senate Finance Committee to scale back the House tax reform bill. They proposed reducing 1972 income tax cuts from 9.87 billion to 7.34 billion and adding a 1.6 billion annual cut in corporate taxes, arguing the House plan risks inflation. After committee revision, the bill moves to the Senate floor this fall.

Fierce Arab guerrilla commando raid along Jordan Riverfront

Arab guerrilla forces claimed they carried out strong commando operations across a 60 mile stretch along the Jordan River cease fire line, with clashes persisting into today. PASC reported multiple guerrillas killed and wounded while Israeli troops suffered casualties near the Damya Bridge.

Alaska Offers 450000 Acre Oil Land in Record Lease Sale

The state plans a two billion dollar bid event for 450,858 acres of oil rich land in Anchorage. Bids may top two billion with checks totaling 20 percent upfront and 80 percent due in 10 days. Woman receives transplanted heart at Stanford Hospital

Betty Johnson, 45, wife of a Utah State University official, is reported in satisfactory condition after a four hour operation led by Dr. Norman Shumway. The transplant is Stanford's sixth long term survivor and the 17th for Shumway's team.

Multiple local items reported in Lompoc police blotter. A tuner cartridge valued at 40 dollars was stolen from Michael Courson’s garage while he was away. Ronald J Hall’s license and Richard R Hall’s pink slip found at Linde's Bar and held by police. A stereo deck and tapes, 87 dollars, stolen from Rex Wright’s car on N Street. A shag rug worth 15 dollars stolen from Henry Gulmer’s yard. Minor rear end collision on West College Avenue involving Danny Soberano and Donald Baird. A Bomarc missile target launched from Vandenberg AFB but failed to meet objectives due to a malfunction.
