Pressure mounts for oil hearing on Santa Cruz Island

Clothing crisis at Santa Maria welfare offices

County officials in Santa Barbara were alerted that AFDC clients in Santa Maria jammed Vine Street offices demanding three school clothing sets for their children. About 50 to 75 clients lingered in corridors with sleeping bags while Arthur Nelson and other welfare staff responded, noting little prior warning from Santa Maria.

Court halts LA Free Press over undercover agents listing

Los Angeles Superior Court barred publication of confidential information by the Los Angeles Free Press after the paper earlier printed names, addresses, and phone numbers of 80 undercover state narcotics agents. Judge Richard Schauer granted injunctive relief and the state sought $25 million in damages for invasion of privacy. The court also barred publication of agent photographs.

Atlas Express designs unstealable truck after hijackings

Atlas Express Ltd in Coalsville England orders engineers to build an unstealable truck after drivers were hijacked by impostor policemen. The design includes a door alarm, steering wheel lock fuel cut off, outside door lock, and door sensors with flashing lights. Drivers carry a sign for police stops and are directed to follow to the nearest station.

Super Loki-Dart Meteorological Rocket Tests

The Air Weather Service and OAR developed the two stage Super Loki Dart rocket to study upper atmosphere. Four launches at the Air Force Western Test Range sent a Starute with a parachute like reflector and a small transmitter to collect wind temperature and density data. Ground radar tracked the Starute while technicians from AFCRL and Vandenberg AFB conducted the mission and seek the return of the instruments for further study. County reviews bids for water relocation at Goleta Beach Park

County officials study two bids for projects including water supply relocation at Goleta Beach Park and a duplex relocation in Lompoc. The Goleta bid from Frank Williams and Co. Ventura came in at 20952 with estimate 21000. Rae Richerson Santa Maria submitted the Lompoc bid of 6950 against a 5500? estimate.

Juveniles fined for theft of crocodile from shop

In Northfleet England two 11 year old boys were fined 4.80 pounds each after pleading guilty to stealing a two foot long crocodile from an animal shop. They appeared in juvenile court on Thursday.

Westside 4 H Club Meeting Postponed to Sept 15

The Westside 4 H Club annual membership meeting moved from today to September 15 at 7 30 p m. The venue is the Security Pacific Bank building second floor at Pine and North H streets. Stolen Tools From Lompoc Garage Worth 71 Dollars

Police report a theft in Lompoc from the garage of Alfred Earnest Dorais at 917 East Pine Avenue. A set of tools valued at 71 dollars was taken and the incident was reported Saturday afternoon.

Security officer relieved of duties at Hamilton AFB

The chief security officer Maj. Donald H. Tidwell was permanently relieved of his post at Hamilton Air Force Base near San Francisco. He will be reassigned to other duties but keep his rank. The case centered on whether he should have relieved Sgt. Robert V. Ballou of Corvallis, Oregon, from guarding a nuclear weapons arsenal after Ballou was diagnosed with mental problems.
