Teacher aids release of six Israelis after hijack

A Los Angeles teacher reportedly secured the release of six Israelis held by Syria after a Trans World Airlines hijacking. The passengers included four men and two women, with Prof. Shomlo Samueloff among the detained. Travelers Flock to Highways for Final Labor Day Flings

United Press International reports a record 100 million travelers will drive about 10 billion miles during the 78 hour Labor Day weekend from Friday 6 p.m. to Monday midnight. Safety officials projected 625 to 725 deaths in traffic accidents, compared with 500 for a typical holiday. Last year’s Labor Day toll reached 688, with the worst summer holiday total set in 1967.

Byrnes Hospitalized In Satisfactory Condition

Former Secretary of State and South Carolina Governor James F. Byrnes, 90, is reported in satisfactory condition at Baptist Hospital after an apparent heart attack. Byrnes, who has been hospitalized three times this year, previously suffered a March stroke and a fever-related readmission.
