Tunnell shifts stance on Reagan tax initiative

Santa Maria County Supervisor Curtis Tunnell says he now supports Proposition 1 after a new study. previously he opposed it along with four other supervisors. Catterlin and Frost retained opposition, with Beattie’s stance unclear. The board did not reconvene for a new vote as predicted deadlock loomed.

City Council approves filing fee for candidates and more

City Administrator Gene Wahlers said 200 has been authorized for North A Street sign changes to aid traffic enforcement near La Honda Elementary. The council approved a 25 filing fee for elective offices, amended sales and use tax rules, accepted Beautification Commissioner Evelyn Cameron's resignation with a plaque, noted 10 000 spent on meetings in the last quarter, and directed Wahlers to hire a sound engineer to improve the public address system. The next meeting is Wednesday November 7 after the November 6 election.

Youth in Government Conference Draws Santa Barbara Students

One hundred twenty Santa Barbara County high school students gathered for the sixth annual two day Youth in Government Conference at the County Administration Building in Santa Barbara. County officials hosted tours of facilities to teach students about county government and potential careers. The event was proposed by Supervisor Curtis Tunnell of Santa Maria, who urged young people to explore county government as a career after school. County supervisors welcomed the students at the start of their board meeting.

County to push Zaca Lake as State Park Campground

Santa Ynez Valley seeks county backing to acquire and develop the Zaca Lake area as a state park campground. County Park Director Michael H. Pahos will ask the Board of Supervisors to propose the move to State Parks director William Penn Mott Jr. and to authorize using State Bond Act funds from 1974 for designation and possible expansion of nearby units such as Gaviota Refugio El Capitan and Carpinteria.

Children blamed for hillside grass and brush fire near Mission Hills

County fire officials blame children for a grass and brush fire that burned a small hillside area off Via Semi in Mission Hills. Witnesses saw smoke as children ran from the area and authorities reported oak trees burned but no structures damaged, though nearby homes were briefly threatened.
