Debaters clash over tax plan in California forum

The Reagan Moretti Brown debate aired on PBS with Pat Brown delivering the sharpest lines. Reagan backed Proposition 1 calling it an economic bill of rights while Moretti warned it would grant minority rule. Milton Friedman predicted higher taxes to fund new programs.

Appeal board to meet twice per week

The County Assessment Appeal Board will hear cases starting November 27 on a twice weekly schedule. Osborne Brazelton of Santa Barbara was named chairman with Patricia Jones of Goleta Valley as vice chair and Dennis Dallaston on the main board. Alternates include Harley Craig of Lompoc and Alvin C Weingand of Montecito. Meetings will be Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:30 and 1:30 in the County Administration Building in Santa Barbara, with Christmas week skipped. Members are paid 100 dollars per day, 70 dollars if the workday is under four hours.

U S and Soviet Navies Bolster Med Forces

The United States and the Soviet Union have strengthened naval forces in the Mediterranean while the U S sends a carrier task force into the Indian Ocean. Costs rise for jet leased for governor in California

Governor Ronald Reagan's state leased jet has cost over 151000 this year with most flights billed to taxpayers though some charges may be borne by the Prop 1 campaign. The six passenger jet flew to events including dinners honoring Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra and the swearing in of a state Supreme Court justice.

Harmer to speak at Allan Hancock College

Senator John L. Harmer Republican from Glendale will speak at Allan Hancock College Thursday at 7 p.m. in the student center. The lecture is free with registration at the door. Co sponsored by Allan Hancock College and the University of California at Santa Barbara as part of the State and Local Government course. Harmer, a former missionary to Britain, cites his observations of socialized systems as shaping his political views and notes his works include We Dare Not Fail and Among the Living Are the Dead and Proposition 18 aimed at pornography controls.

Blood infection outbreak linked to plasma donations in Miami

Miami health officials and federal disease control teams report 11 probable blood infection cases tied to plasma donations from Community Blood Service. 23 hospitalized patients over 10 days showed related symptoms. investigations found no initial evidence of bank negligence but emphasized close surveillance. The firm shut clinics in Miami Tampa and Jacksonville and may reopen soon.

Ford’s 1 400 Page Dossier Opens V P Nomination Hearings

Senate Rules Committee will begin hearings on Gerald R. Ford’s nomination for vice president with a 1 400 page FBI dossier. Ford, named by President Nixon to replace Spiro Agnew, will be the first witness. Chairman Howard Cannon hopes to finish hearings before Thanksgiving.
