Johnson memoirs reveal Kennedy Texas trip politics and Yarborough rift

Lyndon Johnson’s memoirs recount Kennedy’s 1963 Texas visit as a political move to consolidate the Democratic coalition and his own clash with Senator Yarborough over federal appointments. The narrative suggests Kennedy’s Texas standing was fragile, influenced by Bay of Pigs, finances, and civil rights, with implications for 1964. Impeach King Arthur jokes aside, the text notes changing views of Kennedy’s popularity and post Dallas political debate. Also included is a local note: property owners may face higher filing fees for agricultural preserves under a new policy guiding group preserves and mini preserves with a $100 fee plus rezoning costs.

Plans to clear eucalyptus forest for Ellwood subdivision

The Ellwood area faces a 500-lot grid subdivision by an out-of-county developer that would remove about 20 acres of eucalyptus trees, a move critics say risks the forest cited as Monarch butterfly habitat. The Goleta County Water District area near Ellwood Acres also hosts a 55-space Capistrano mobile home project that would cut further into the forest, drawing mixed reactions from the County Subdivision Committee who criticized the plan’s imagination and flexibility.
