Mining in agricultural preserves faces county oversight
County officials say a finding that diatomaceous earth mining is compatible with agricultural preserves has never been adopted as a uniform rule by the Board of Supervisors. Carl F. Kraemer urges action, noting mining must be incidental to agriculture and material moved off-site. The advisory committee references a prior county resolution for Rancho La Vina and Solvang areas that recommended including such mining in preserve criteria.
