Deadline nears for California candidates to file campaign reports

Sacramento authorities report a midnight deadline to comply with campaign finance laws. At least 75 of 134 cited candidates have filed after last year’s penalties. Norton Simon and former U.S. Sen. George Murphy faced issues with court orders. Some used court waivers and expedited routes to submit statements, while Don Clausen filed a zero-report with court approval.

Arrested after 44 years in police slaying case

Los Angeles authorities booked 67 year old Matthew Kilgaritt on suspicion of murder in the 1927 shooting of Officer Parley Bennett after Kilgaritt volunteered information about the robbery and officer’s death. He was detained during a disturbance call at a Hollywood apartment.

Banquet of Century Ends at Persepolis Celebration

UPI reports a 2 500th anniversary banquet for the Persian Empire in Persepolis hosted by the Shah of Iran. Guests from 69 nations dined in a large desert tent while a heralded history show and a multi nation fireworks display lit the night sky. Empress Farah marked her 33rd birthday as winds tested the tent and chandeliers.

Investigation under way after California Aqueduct break near Lancaster

State Water Resources Director William Gianelli ordered an inquiry into whether last winter's San Fernando earthquake caused the Aqueduct rupture near Lancaster. The 100 million gallons of water flooded Antelope Valley as crews estimate repair costs at 50 000 to 100 000 dollars and a up to three months. Authorities discounted sabotage though the cause remains a mystery.

Lompoc Record Adopts Second Class Mail Status

The Lompoc Record of California announces its registration as second class mail under congressional act. The notice lists officers such as Mrs. Kenneth L. Adam president and Harry J. Senate committee Cuts 20 Percent From Overseas Military Aid

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee slashed 20 percent from the administration's overseas military aid request for the year ending June 30, 1972. It also dropped a companion economic aid program, set an Israel allocation of 85 million, and banned any military shipments to Pakistan. The panel previously restricted aid to Greece and Cambodia, with final action awaiting House votes on an end the war amendment.
