Hungarian born Endre Peter Darvas, 24, a prodigious watercolorist active across the Southwest, stays with Lompoc sculptor Noval Casteel en search of future shows. He works in acrylic watercolors on polymer treated paper, painting in 8 to 10 hours a week, sometimes 32 pieces in Taos. He has sold about 1 400 paintings in eight years, with 900 in private collections, including figures such as Lyndon B. Johnson, John Connally and Dan Bowen, and is represented by Reynolds Gallery Taos First Avenue Gallery Scottsdale and Ben Dubose Gallery Houston. He has won multiple awards and his works range from 75 to 800 dollars.

Soviet airliner hijacked to Turkey in first known Soviet hijack
A Lithuanian truck driver and his 19 year old son hijacked a Soviet airliner near Batumi forcing it to fly to Trabzon Turkey. An airline hostess was killed and two pilots wounded in the battle aboard the plane. The hijackers carried multiple firearms and grenades and surrendered to Turkish gendarmes later.

Five hurt in traffic accidents in Lompoc Valley
Three crashes injure five people including three teenage girls. Kimberly Eaton, 16, suffered a fractured vertebrae and was in satisfactory condition after a College Avenue crash that damaged a light standard. Catherine Leck, 16, and Sylvia Sanders, 15, received minor injuries at Lompoc Hospital. A second collision near Highways 1 and 246 injured Richard Sherry, 17, while John Giles and Gerald Gray escaped injury. A third wreck south of Santa Rosa Road injured Walter Grisham, 27, who was treated and transferred to Santa Maria hospital.

The County Planning Commission denied Utaka Hayashi a conditional zoning exception to place a trailer as a permanent dwelling on 6 acres at 4395 South Blosser Rd in Orcutt. Mrs. Byron H. Kelly received partial approval for two trailers on a 60 acre Orcutt property but only one trailer with a one year occupancy. A third permit approved validated temporary occupancy of a trailer at 7331 Shepard Mesa Rd in Carpinteria during dwelling construction on an estate zoned site.
