Giant grape harvester debuts in Santa Ynez Valley harvest
A six ton blue and yellow mechanical picker from Upright Harvest Co. will harvest about 400 acres along Refugio and Foxen Canyon Roads. The Vector upright and hillside picker stands 12 feet tall and operates day and night for four weeks, shaking grapes into bins hauled by tractor. Initial investment totals $52,000 and growers say the crop will be very good if no rain delays finish.

The first annual convention of the Rebild National Park Society of California starts this weekend with a dinner dance at the Santa Ynez Indian Reservation and a Sunday conference at the Solvang Municipal Improvement District. Attendees include members from Seattle, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego and Orange County. Reservations for the dinner dance are $10 per person.
