Eight die in Los Angeles wooden-apartment blaze
A pre-dawn fire gutted a 40 year old wooden building in Los Angeles. Eight people died and seven were injured with 30 rescued. Fireman David Smith performed mouth to mouth on 6 year old Anthony Porter Jr. who survived in good condition at a hospital. Officials call the blaze suspicious in origin.

Tuolumne County authorities report Chet W. Young 38 of Alameda killed himself in a remote California area after an apparent failed asphyxiation attempt. The man had earlier killed Bill Lennon father of the Lennon Sisters and had harassed the family for years. Police found letters and Lennon clippings in Youngs car.
