Lompoc moves to annex FCI area via Pine Canyon Road easement

Lompoc City Council adopted a resolution accepting an easement for Pine Canyon Road through the Federal Correctional Institution to pave the way for annexation. City officials expect a federal clearance letter soon and aim to place the item on the LAFCO agenda for a year-end completion.

Army and Marines Move Into Washington for Civil Unrest

A 9,000 strong force of Army and Marine troops moved into Washington to handle potential disorders during antiwar protests. The unit, led by the 82nd Airborne from Fort Bragg and the 2nd Marine Division from Camp Lejeune, will operate on federal property unless asked to assist by Justice Department and local officials.

U S Troops Break Guerrilla Push South of DMZ

U S forces in armored personnel carriers surprised North Vietnamese units three miles south of the DMZ. In an 11 hour battle on three hills twelve NVA were killed. Two U S soldiers died and ten wounded.

Hickel urges long range funds for pollution control and land

Interior Secretary Walter J. Hickel called for long term financing plans to fund water pollution abatement and the acquisition of new parks and public lands. He criticized annual appropriations as insufficient and suggested a possible new approach. He also urged abolishing DDT except in emergencies with interdepartmental agreement and cited Santa Barbara as a notable achievement.

House approves 1970 California military construction funds

The House Appropriations Committee approved FY 1970 military construction funding for Vandenberg AFB and the Western Test Range totaling 2.615 million dollars. California military builds receive 110.19 million. Specific Vandenberg and Western Test Range allocations total 394k, 116k, and 2.105 million respectively, with no identified projects. Other base funding in California includes Beale 126k, Castle 597k, Edwards 394k, George 1.284m, and Travis 11.865m among others.

Indira Gandhi Expelled by Congress in Power Struggle

The conservative wing of India's Congress ousted Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from party membership, threatening her premiership. Demonstrators gathered at Mrs Gandhi's HQ and a leader called the action just the beginning of a nationwide Syndicate opposition campaign. Nine Gandhi supporters boycotted and called the move unconstitutional.

Chilean airliner hijacked with 70 aboard

A LAN Caravelle jet carrying 70 people was hijacked on a domestic Chilean flight from Santiago to Puerto Montt and diverted to Antofagasta for refueling before continuing to Cuba. Airline officials announced the incident.

Senators Predict Close Vote On Haynsworth Nomination

Senate whips from both parties forecast a tight confirmation fight for Judge Clement Haynsworth Jr to the Supreme Court with only two or three votes deciding. Senators Kennedy and Griffin oppose the nomination, while Brooke and Aiken say enough votes exist to block it. Allott backs Haynsworth, arguing no new facts alter his view.

Finch endorses ban on DDT use in U.S.

HEW Secretary Robert H. Finch backs a report proposing ending major DDT use in the United States within two years. Undersecretary John G. Vereman said Finch discussed the plan with two Cabinet colleagues Agriculture Secretary Clifford M. Hardy and Interior Secretary Walter J. Hickel who were receptive to the idea.

Marcos Re elected in Philippines Vote Breaking Tradition

President Ferdinand E. Marcos won re election becoming the Philippines first incumbent to secure another term. His Nacionalista Party held promise of a clear edge in both houses as the campaign turned bitter with 67 deaths since July including 26 on election day. Senator Sergio Osmena Jr disputed defeat as projections showed Marcos leading by about 5 million votes with millions remaining uncounted.

Louie Anliker of Lompoc finishes second in the Pismo Beach clam digging contest with a 6 inch clam. Mrs Don Ausbrooks reports the return of Spitz dog from Record publicity. Carol Asta of 493 Milky Way finds a rum bottle on the beach. Oceanic Office note says bottle was thrown from SS Tucurinca on Feb 3, 1969. Forecast shows fair through Thursday with highs 75 to 85 and lows 45 to 55. Thursday tides include high 6.2 feet at 11:20 a.m. and lows 2.8 feet at 4:44 a.m. and minus 0.6 feet at 7:14 p.m.
