Senate hearing details profit scheme in Vietnam service clubs

Witnesses testified that Sgt Major William Wooldridge and associates formed Maredem Co to route profits from Vietnam service clubs through a self serving corporation. The firm reportedly earned 1.2 million in 11 months with 131 761 in profit, amid allegations of kickbacks and embezzlement by the sergeants and other officers. The subcommittee’s second week of hearings covered the alleged scheme and related misconduct.

Trucker Rescued After Lompoc Crash Blocks Roadway

Firemen freed 64 year old Frank Zimmerman from a wrecked Lompoc Casmalia Road truck after over an hour of effort. He was in satisfactory condition at Lompoc Hospital with a fractured left leg and a lacerated left arm. The one am crash spilled 12 tons of lima beans along a six inch deep swath.

Four rescued from sub trapped on ocean floor

Four men aboard the Deep Quest were trapped on the ocean floor for more than 12 hours as its propulsion line fouled the propeller. A two man Nekton mini-sub rescued them, reaching the surface at 3 50 a m PDT. The crew, led by Robert Worthington, were reported unharmed though chilled and hungry.
