Chicago riot injures nineteen as SDS led mob smashes windows

Mobs chanting Viva Che and opposed to Daley rampaged through Chicago’s near North Side and Old Town on Wednesday night during a four day protest honoring Che Guevara. Nineteen injured, ten police among them, with sixty six arrests for assault, resisting arrest, and mob action.

Judiciary committee OKs Haynsworth for Supreme Court

The Senate Judiciary Committee endorsed Judge Clement F. Haynsworth by a 10 to 6 vote, but full Senate confirmation appears uncertain. Five Republicans and five Democrats supported him, with Griffin voting against and Mathias abstaining. Eastland expects a comfortable Senate majority though votes remain tight. U S Deaths Hit Three Year Low in Vietnam

UPI reports American battle deaths fell to 64 last week the lowest in 34 months. Wounded totaled 900 as fighting lull continued with light combat and a mortar attack near the DMZ. Viet Cong and North Vietnamese losses reached 1,899.

Railroad plans traffic safeguards at North A Street crossing

Southern Pacific proposes adding traffic controls at the North A Street crossing at a city cost of 2500 dollars with the railroad and city sharing expenses. Half of the city’s portion may be repaid by the California Public Utilities Commission, but certainty is unclear. City officials question city cost sharing while traffic engineer Soper seeks PUC traffic rules and cost guidance. The current electronic gates, installed in 1967, have drawn complaints after accidents and alleged malfunctions.

Youth Center debated by teens and parks panel
