Wholesale prices fall as Nixon wage price freeze starts

UPI reports September wholesale prices declined 0.4 percent under Nixon's 90 day wage price freeze. The drop, seasonally adjusted, marks the first decline in 10 months and comes ahead of the September unemployment report. Industrial commodities fell 0.1 percent. farm products and processed foods dropped 1.7 percent. consumer finished goods down 0.9 percent.

Connally Defends Tax Bill Against Corporate Bias Claims

Treasury Secretary John B. Connally Jr. rejected Senate charges that a House approved 15.4 billion tax cut favors corporations. He argued individuals have borne most of the five year tax relief, while highlighting planned corporate growth and international competitiveness from business tax cuts. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Russell Long urged more relief for individuals and less for business.

Brush fire devastates homes near Montecito and Romero Canyon

More than 1,000 firefighters battled the Romero Fire northeast of Santa Barbara as it scorched 2,500 acres. Seven structures burned including expensive Montecito homes. a 74 year old man was severely burned while attempting to save his house. Fire crews from as far as Monterey and Santa Ana fought dry north and east winds.

Court order fails to move western longshoremen

In San Francisco the West Coast longshore union did not immediately end dock pickets after a federal court ordered workers back on the job. A stop work meeting was set for Friday to discuss the injunction, with 72 ships still tied up and cargo movement uncertain.

City Creates Six Jobs Under Emergency Employment Act

More than 100 people filed applications for six City of Lompoc positions under the federal Emergency Employment Act. The Rural Job Assistance office said applications cease today. The council added electrical estimator, junior accountant, and services clerk roles. City Administrator Gene Wahlers announced about 40 000 more in federal funds will supplement 54 000 already approved. The funds cover salaries and training for one year with a moral obligation to retain half the new hires beyond the year if funding ends. Some positions are already budgeted, providing a free ride for a year.
