Brush Fire Traps Firefighters Near Santa Barbara

A killer brush fire east of Santa Barbara has burned 4500 acres of brushland as crews fight to contain it. Four Forest Service workers died trapped in a firestorm and two others were injured, including Gerald Hotchkiss 24 and Leonard Kaiser 43. Firefighters say containment is delayed with no end in sight while evacuations affected about 100 families.

Connally urges labor to back Nixon wage price plan

Treasury Secretary Connally urged labor to cooperate with Nixon phase II as a wage and price control system evolves. He said final government authority remains over wage decisions, with boards guiding increases while veto power rests with the administration. He asked AFL CIO President Meany to join the Pay Board and noted public and management roles. The wage price freeze runs through Nov 13 with guidelines due by then.

Committee Tackles Recycling Ecology Move

Mayor Arthur Scott named five private citizens Bruce Sharpe Jean Jacoby Art Heinrich Marge Adam and Don Hinderliter to a city committee on recycling. Hinderliter a Air Force major and longtime activist urges immediate pilot programs and laws to promote glass metal and newspaper recycling to cut waste and costs. The group plans a first meeting soon.

Strikers Back To Work In West Coast Ports Return

Longshoremen union leader Harry Bridges ordered West Coast dock workers to perform preliminary work in preparation for returning to their jobs Saturday, ending a 100 day strike. Federal judge Taft Hartley cooling off order prompted the move as picket lines stayed up until today’s union meetings. Maintenance and supervisory staff were expected to resume first shift Saturday, though full normal operations could take weeks across 24 ports.

Jobless rate falls as payrolls hit new high

In September unemployment declined from 6.1 to 6 percent, the first full month under Nixon's policies. Employment rose by 325,000 to a seasonally adjusted 79.5 million as students returned to school, a signal of cheer from administration spokesmen. AFL-CIO counters that the data show no benefit from the president's program.

Lompoc Gains Two Deputies Ahead of Citizens Appeal

Sheriff John Carpenter assigns two additional deputies to the Lompoc Substation raising staff to 11 including nine deputies, one sergeant commander and one detective. The move aims at one deputy per 1250 residents as a countywide upgrade. A local petition with 600 signatures from Mission Hills Vandenberg Village and Jalama Road seeks more law enforcement.

Two youth drop-in centers planned in Lompoc area

Lompoc and Vandenberg Village plan two youth drop-in centers guided by the Lompoc Valley Drug Abuse Coordinating Council. The project seeks California Council on Criminal Justice funds with the school district and City Council as sponsors.
