Ocean sport fishery slow amid winds and changing rules

Ocean fishing out of Avila has slowed due to heavy winds and rough water with few boats venturing out. Harbor Associates of Port San Luis report no salmon checked in for the week ending Oct. 3 as coastal catches remain poor from Humboldt to Mendocino counties. Surf fishing near Oceano yields nice perch limits and some steelhead sightings while Lopez Lake shows good trout limits as anglers await possible all year trout seasons and adjusted lake limits proposed by the DFG. Deer kills in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties declined from last year, with official totals noted but excluding special hunts.

Amazin Mets Next on Orioles List After Twins Rout

The Baltimore Orioles crushed the Minnesota Twins 11-2 to sweep a three game playoff set and move within four wins of another title. Manager Earl Weaver plans to ride the same trio of starters Cuellar McNally and Palmer as he eyes a possible four game series with the New York Mets. Paul Blair led with five hits and a 407 foot homer, while Don Buford Boog Powell Eldon Hendricks and Mark Belanger added multi hit efforts. The Twins collapsed after a fast start as seven pitchers failed to slow Baltimore’s pennant bound offense.

Defense sets stage for Braves initial triumph

Lompoc Braves coach Jim Spurill credited improved defense after a 27-0 win over the San Luis Obispo Tigers. He praised the entire unit for limiting rushing to minus three yards and allowing 94 passing yards. Individual honors went to David Skidmore as top defensive lineman and Charley Jackson as defensive back of the week for standout plays and a key interception. Carter return and blocks fueled 86 yard punt return TDs and two scores, with Gary Cox limited by injury. Friday’s road game vs Arroyo Grande aims to stop Tom Jones, a dual threat. The note recalls a 14-14 tie in a prior home game with Stouch Rodgers Vermilion.

Letdown concerns loom after Cabrillo Notre Dame win

Cabrillo coach Evert Jones praised a 260 yard total offense and a standout defense in the 21-20 victory over Notre Dame. He cautioned that last year’s bounce after a big win mirrors this season as Cabrillo prepares to face South Bakersfield, emphasizing focus and avoiding flat moments.
