City Council defers nuisance action on Minnie Pearl signs

The council postponed further steps against two Minnie Pearl restaurant signs on North H Street pending a written removal agreement by January 1, 1972. The signs, tied to defunct products, drew fire as weeds and planter neglect were noted. A realty rep offered cleanup and a buyer with a substantial deposit proposed new sign plans to the architectural board.

Arsonist Ignites 2200 Acre Brush Fire Near Fillmore

A wind driven brush fire sparked by a delayed ignition device roared across 2200 acres north of Fillmore threatening homes. Officials said 75 percent contained early today as 700 firefighters battled erratic winds. A second arson linked blaze burned 250 acres two miles south with 19 county units dispatched.

Equalization board cuts Santa Barbara County assessments

The County Board of Equalization opened 1971 property assessment appeals in Santa Barbara and granted reductions for Carpinteria Valley and Montecito properties. Freehaven Development Co. reduced to 10000, DeWitt and Quackenbush parcels in Montecito trimmed from 161000 to 129000, Ben Thompson from 35000 to 30000, and Clark R. Fletcher to 8000. Denials affected Humphrey, Cadwell, and Scholl in Carpinteria Valley. Next district appeals are set for Wednesday Oct 13.

A northbound car traveled in the southbound lanes without lights and collided with a car carrying Ruth Scott Schuetz and Elizabeth Roberts Phillips. Musgraves died. the two women, both in Marian Hospital Santa Maria, suffered serious injuries.

Nixon to unveil Phase II economic plan Thursday

President Nixon will address the nation at 7 30 p m Thursday announcing Phase II of the economic program after a 90 day wage price freeze. The White House gave few details but said the plan will cover the whole economy with focus on major industries and government enforcement. The House approved a 15 4 billion tax cut bill to run three years, boosting personal exemptions and standard deductions while removing the 7 percent auto tax.
