California urges temporary mini tax bill to avert crisis

State Controller Houston Flournoy called on Gov. Reagan and the legislature to pass a temporary mini tax bill to cover a 330 million dollar deficit and avoid a fiscal crisis. Senator George Moscone accused Reagan of driving a wedge with Moretti as tax reform talks stalled.

House panel approves desegregation bill over busing ban

The House Education and Labor Committee approved a $1.5 billion desegregation bill on a 24-3 vote, rejecting Nixon’s antibusing stance though an amendment is expected. In Gardena, federal agents raided Ramona Banuelos’ packing plant, arresting 36 illegal aliens as 35 workers fled. Banuelos claimed ignorance of illegal hires and suggested Democrats seek to derail her nomination.

Cemetery labor pact ends four month strike in San Francisco

Cemetery workers Local 265 voted 141 to 9 to approve a three year contract retroactive to March 1 raising pay from 34.20 to 39 a day with a future rise to 45.40 from February 1, 1974. Grave digging resumes in six weeks to clear 1,800 unburied bodies.

Showers and scattered thunderstorms moved from the Central Atlantic states to far western Florida early today while skies remained clear west of the Mississippi. Washington D C near 2 inches of rain and Newport News Virginia over 2 inches in six hours. Light rain touched coastal Texas and Louisiana with a few showers in the Great Lakes region. Temperatures ranged from 83 at Key West Florida to 34 at Laramie Wyoming.
