Portugal on war alert after failed rightist coup plot

Portugal's armed forces were placed on war alert as authorities rounded up more than 300 suspected rightists after a plan to dismantle the government. Police raided the Progress party office in Lisbon, confiscating molotov cocktails and weapon manuals. A high‑ranking source said the coup aimed to assassinate former President Antonio de Spinola, who resigned after a power struggle with Premier Vasco Goncalves.

California extends unemployment benefits to 101000 through April

The California Assembly approved SB2482 to continue extended unemployment insurance through April 30 1975 if the state maintains a 4 percent insured unemployment rate. The measure costs about 44 million dollars with half funded by the federal government and half by California employers. It now goes to Governor Reagan.

Gov Ronald Reagan expected to appoint Sen John L Harmer to fill the unexpired term after Ed Reinecke was sentenced for perjury.
