County Hears Plan to Merge Environmental Agencies
County Environmental Quality Coordinator Albert F. Reynolds urged the Board of Supervisors to absorb the two temporary environmental review bodies into the new Office of Environmental Quality effective Oct. 29. Ghost Riders bike safety program launched in Lompoc
Lompoc Police Chief James Smith announces an expanded Ghost Riders program for elementary students. Officer Bud Trimble will teach road signs safe riding and bicycle care using visual aids and a booklet. Cachuma Lake to Begin Ninth Year of Trout Planting
The Department of Fish and Game will start trout planting at Cachuma Lake on October 17 and continue to January 9, 1974, with about 28 000 pounds of catchable fish. Planting will occur on alternate weeks and be funded by gate receipts, local merchants, county fines, and part by the County Park Department. Additional pan fish varieties will be planted to boost family fishing activity.

AWOL soldier admits killings in Ohio Virginia and beyond
Army specialist Jack Reale 23 confessed to killing two men in Ohio and four in Virginia including an ex mayor of Norfolk during weekend questioning. Police say he also discussed rape slayings of two Pittsburgh girls in Virginia and confessed to dumping a body near a rock quarry after kidnapping a driver.
