United Mine Workers President Arnold Miller says 120000 striking miners may return to work next week if they approve a three year contract ratified by the union bargaining council. The pact increases wages and benefits by 64 percent and ends the 16 day walkout. The council approved after two prior rejections, prompting the rank and file vote set for Monday.

Union vote ends long coal contract talks stalemate
Miller pushed a lengthy ratification plan after his election as president. Coal negotiations began September 3 with a tentative deal reached November 13, then revised by the bargaining council. A further tentative pact was later agreed under Usery and William F Simon. The contract adds major pay hikes, pension boosts, an extra holiday, more vacation, paid sick leave, safety measures, more union jobs, and extended health coverage for widows.
