Sun Oil seeks permit for marine power cable at Summerland beach

Sun Oil Co DxX Division has filed with the County Planning Commission to install a marine power and communications cable near Lookout Park to feed an onshore substation. The project would connect to a nearby Union Oil platform about 5.5 miles offshore, with power likely sourced from the Southern California Edison substation in Toro Canyon slated for replacement. Air Force Sgt Ronald H. Fick, a former Lompoc student, received the Airman's Medal for heroism at Kadena Air Base Okinawa on March 10, 1969 after he rushed to a burning fuel truck by an aircraft, extinguishing the flames.

Welfare cases halted cuts reversed for two county residents

A university student and an elderly Santa Barbara resident won appeals restoring Aid to the Blind and Old Age Assistance payments after the Board of Supervisors had cut them off for being abroad. Nixon signs draft law to start lottery by birth date

Apollo 12 splashdown hard jolt yields record impact

The Apollo 12 crew Bean Conrad and Gordon landed aboard USS Hornet after a splashdown that rattled teeth and left Bean with a forehead gash. They called the touchdown the hardest in an Apollo mission and began a second day of self debriefing as rock samples are quarantined and studied. The three astronauts, now in good condition, arrived in Pearl Harbor and will depart for Houston as quarantine extends to December 10. Meanwhile a county personnel director dispute in Santa Barbara led to an executive session of the Board of Supervisors with possible suspensions.

Picket line set today over county welfare pay raise

The AFL-CIO Social Workers Union Local 535 announces an informational picket at the County Administration Building in Santa Barbara at noon today protesting the Board of Supervisors decision to grant only 2,000 county employees higher pay boosts while eligibility workers receive no increase. The union notes some workers earn less than clerks and cites morale decline after a 5 to 10 percent raises for most staff and a 22 percent boost for others. union argues for a 72 percent raise for eligibility workers and recalls the 1966 walkout in county government history.
