Car leaves highway hits tree near Wye

Harry August Kammen, 52, of 925 E Oak Ave, escaped injury when his car left Highway 1 a mile north of the Wye, striking a tree. The vehicle sustained major damage, per the California Highway Patrol report.

Burglary Report At Van denberg Village Home

The sheriff's office said a burglary at Arthur E. Bradish's home at 267 Aldebaran Ave. Van denberg Village led to theft of a .22 rifle valued at 250 and 1 200 rounds of ammunition plus two walkie talkies and a BB gun. Total loss estimated at 390. Missing items reported yesterday.

Car Wash to Benefit Christmas Party for Retarded Children

The California Youth Council for Retarded Children will host a car wash Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Arco service station on W Ocean Avenue near the Williams Bros shopping center to raise funds for a Christmas party for retarded children. Hijacking of Polish airliner by two youths

Two Polish youths about 20 armed with a toy pistol and cans claimed as bombs hijacked a LOT Airlines Antonov 24 en route from Wroclaw to Warsaw. They forced a landing at Vienna Schwechat Airport where 18 passengers and 4 crew were removed. Officials differed on whether the cans held live explosives.

Beattie farm preserves urged to shield Lompoc area farmland

The Santa Barbara County planning commission, in a near unanimous vote, approved preserving about 251 acres of Beattie holdings west of Lompoc from urban encroachment. Attorney Lawrence Grossman defended the family’s 6,000 acres as essential for farming, noting industrial sites lie along the railroad and the airport. The panel also recommended rezoning to 40 acre general agricultural district to align with preserve status.
